Follow the process below when you want to move out:
- Step 1: Ask us to send you a ‘notice to quit’ form before you move out. The ‘notice to quit’ is a legal document that you must complete and send back to us. You’ll need to give us 4 full weeks’ notice before moving out – this will start from the date we receive your ‘notice to quit’ form. This means if we receive your ‘notice to quit’ on a Tuesday, your 4 weeks won’t start until the following Monday. To get a ‘notice to quit’ form, you can:
- Complete the form at the bottom of this page
- Phone us on 0113 386 1000
- Speak to your Neighbourhood Officer
Once we’ve received your request, we’ll send you a ‘notice to quit’ form to complete.
- Step 2: Fill in your ‘notice to quit’ form and send it back to us. Remember your 4 full weeks’ notice starts from the date we receive your ‘notice to quit’ form.
- Step 3: Your Neighbourhood Officer will visit you to look at the condition of your home and answer any questions you have about your tenancy ending. We’ll include details about the visit when we send you your ‘notice to quit’ form to complete.
When you’re moving out, there are some important things that you need to do and think about:
When we send you the ‘notice to quit’ form we’ll tell you how much you owe as at that date. We’ll charge you another four weeks for the notice period. We may also need to add repair costs to your account but we’ll tell you if this happens.
If you need to check your rent account at any point you can log into My Account or call us on 0113 386 1000.
We’ll tell you how and when to hand in your keys when we send you the ‘notice to quit’ form. We’ll ask you to ring us on 0113 386 1000 to let us know you’ve returned your keys.
If you don’t return your keys to the right location and call us to confirm this by the date and time we set, we may charge you for an extra week’s rent.
You’ll need to leave your home and garden in a clean, tidy condition. This means that you’ll need to remove all furniture, floor coverings (unless agreed with your Neighbourhood Officer), belongings and any rubbish before you leave. If we need to clean your home or remove items from your home after you’ve left, we may charge you for this.
If you, or your visitors, have caused any damage to your home, you’ll need to put this right before you leave. If we need to put damage right for you, we may charge you for this.
You’ll need to get in touch with different organisations to tell them you’re moving so they can update their records. We’ve listed some suggestions below:
- Benefits office
- Pensions authority
- Any provider of personal pensions
- HMRC
- Employer
- National insurance
- Post office (if you want to redirect your mail)
- Your bank / building society
- Council tax office / local council
- Insurance policies – contents, life, car insurance or others
- TV Licensing Authority
- Professional organisations – RAC or AA, union, etc.
- Present school and arrange a place at another school if necessary
- Doctor, dentist, optician, hospital (if relevant)
- DVLA if you own a car/driving licence
- Gas, electricity and water supplier
- Telephone and internet company
- Loan company
- Credit card company
- Catalogues and other mail order companies
- Hire purchase companies
- Magazine or any subscriptions
- Newsagent
- Milkman
- Window cleaner
