Using extension leads and cable reels safely can help prevent electrical fires in your home.

Extension leads and cable reels can become dangerous if they’re overloaded or not used properly.

When you leave a cable reel fully or partially coiled while using it to power electrical appliances, heat can build up within the cable. If this heat can’t escape, the cable can overheat, damaging the insulation and potentially causing a fire.

The risk increases if you connect higher-powered appliances, such as portable heaters, kettles, microwaves, tumble dryers, washing machines, dishwashers, or air fryers.

Simple Steps to Stay Safe

  • Always fully unwind cable reels before use, even if you only need a short length of cable.
  • Avoid overloading extension leads. Check the manufacturer’s maximum power rating. Having spare sockets does not necessarily mean it is safe to connect more appliances.
  • Never connect extension leads together. This is sometimes called daisy chaining and can increase the risk of overheating and fire.
  • Plug high-powered appliances directly into wall sockets. This includes portable heaters, washing machines and tumble dryers.
  • Avoid using extension leads permanently. Wherever possible, use a fixed wall socket.
  • Check for damage. Look for frayed cables, cracked sockets, loose connections, scorch marks or signs of overheating.
  • Keep cables uncovered. Never run them under carpets, rugs or furniture, or leave them tightly coiled.
  • Switch off and unplug extension leads when not in use, where safe and practical.

What should you do if you notice a problem?

If an extension lead, plug or socket becomes unusually hot, smells of burning, produces smoke or shows signs of damage:

  • Stop using it immediately. Switch off the power and unplug it, but only if it is safe to do so.
  • Do not use damaged extension leads again. Replace them with a suitable, undamaged product.
  • Report concerns about wall sockets or fixed wiring to us so we can assess them.
  • If there is a fire or smoke, get out, stay out and call 999. Don’t put yourself at risk!
