Each quarter, residents at Whincup Gardens get together for a resident’s meeting with Kescia Awork, our Support Coordinator. It’s an opportunity for residents to raise issues and suggest ideas for improvements.
At a recent meeting, Kescia asked residents what they enjoy doing and what activities they’d like to try.
“People didn’t know where to start so I made some suggestions like tea and biscuits or coffee and cake. Food always brings people together and creates a community spirit. It makes people feel good and creates a good energy.” – Kescia
After some discussion, residents settled on bacon butties as their food of choice and launched their own Bacon Butty Morning.
“I helped set up the first group to get things going and show people how it might run. I did the cooking and my colleague Sharon Lanceley, Neighbourhood Officer, helped too.” – Kescia
The group has now been running for a few sessions and continues to be popular.
“It’s brilliant that the residents chose the theme and name for the Bacon Butty Morning themselves based on what they enjoy. New people are always welcome to join in and if bacon butties aren’t their thing the group will change to make sure people feel included.” – Kescia
At the next quarterly resident’s meeting Kescia will ask residents about other activities or groups they might like to try out.

The importance of place
We know home is much more than bricks and mortar. Home is about belonging, community and place. In this leaflet you can find out more about what we're doing to nurture communities and build a sense of place.
