As part of Leeds Federated’s 50th anniversary celebrations, we had the pleasure of speaking with one of our long-term customers, Audrey, who has lived with us for an impressive 42 years.
Audrey lives at Memorial Drive, one of the first developments we built from scratch back in 1979.
Her story reflects our purpose; to help people make a home. Our work goes beyond just providing housing – it’s about creating safe, supportive communities where people can build lasting relationships and memories, and for 42 years Audrey has done just that.
Where it all started
“I first came to live with Leeds Federated when the council took over Cavalier House, where I had been living in a three-bedroom flat with my two daughters,” she says.
“They were doing alterations to make it into two-bedroom flats, but we needed a three-bedroom home. So, we reached out to Leeds Federated to see if there was anything available.”
It wasn’t long before they found a house on Memorial Drive. “We went to have a look around and it felt like the right place for us. The process was quick, and we were able to decorate the house just how we wanted it. It was a smooth transition, and we were so happy to move in.”
42 years on, Audrey and her husband continue to thrive in the neighbourhood.
“We’ve been very happy living here. It’s a nice street and we’re one of two houses on our plot. We’ve been lucky with our neighbours. Everyone knows each other, and they always make time for a chat.
“I always try to attend any events happening in the Memorial Drive community lounge. Last year I attended the Christmas party, and it was lovely. It’s nice that we get together.”
“We all know each other here, and if someone doesn’t know your name, you make sure to say hello. Living in an area where everyone is so friendly makes a big difference – the community is fantastic.”
Prompt and professional service
“I’ve always had good experiences with any repairs from Leeds Federated and their contractors.” she says. “Whenever something breaks, they come straight away. I’ve never had any complaints. They’ve always been quick and efficient.”
In addition to repairs, Audrey says the upkeep of the neighbourhood’s green spaces has been consistent. “I used to do a bit of gardening, but I can’t manage it as much anymore,” she notes. “But the gardeners come regularly to cut the grass on the front, which is really good to see and sometimes I go outside and have a natter with them. They’re a friendly bunch.”
Audrey recently had her bathroom renovated to a wet room which was funded by the council as part of a Disabled Facilities Grant. The grant helps to fund home adaptations so people can continue to live in their homes.
She was happy with the works done and the service provided by our in-house contractors, APS, she said, “The contractors from APS were very polite, friendly, and professional and did an exceptionally good job. I’m really pleased with it.”
Making a house a home
“What I also love about living here is the location – it’s so convenient,” she says. “I can walk to the shops, catch the bus, and everything is nearby. It makes life easier, and I love that.”
Despite the years passing, the desire to move somewhere else has never crossed her mind. “I’ve been very happy living here, and I still enjoy it. The neighbours, the community, and the service from Leeds Federated – they’ve all been wonderful. It’s been a wonderful place to live.”
“I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else. I’m lucky to have this house and I’m happy here.”
