Managed migration- moving to Universal Credit

01 Apr 2024
Managed Migration is the final phase of the roll out of Universal Credit. It is where those claiming one or more of the ‘legacy’ benefits that Universal Credit is replacing are ‘invited’ to claim Universal Credit instead.
If you receive a ’legacy’ benefit, then when it is your turn to move onto Universal Credit the DWP will send you a ‘Migration Notice’.

The following benefits are ending and being replaced by Universal Credit:
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefits
  • Income support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Working Tax Credit

The DWP started issuing Migration Notices for the following from April 2024:
  • Tax Credits with any legacy benefits – From April 2024
  • Tax Credits with Housing Benefit – From April 2024
  • Income Support – From April – June 2024
  • Housing Benefit – From June 2024
  • Employment Support Allowance (Income Related) (with Housing Benefit) with Child Tax Credits - from July - September 2024
  •  Over State Pension Age claiming Tax credits – From August 2024 (invited to apply for either Universal Credit or Pension Credit)
  • Income based Job Seekers Allowance – From September 2024

REMEMBER: Those on Income-Related ESA (& Housing Benefit) but no Tax Credits i.e. those without children, will not be part of the Managed Migration process until 2028.
If you are affected by these changes, you will get a managed migration notice from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) called a notice of managed migration. Once you have this letter, you will have three months to act.
