The importance of community and mental health

13 May 2025

This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week! This year the focus is on “Community” and how coming together and supporting each other can make a big difference to our mental health.

Being part of a community can boost our mental health in many ways, helping us feel happier and safer. It can provide connections and friendships with those around us, reducing isolation and building a sense of belonging.

A great example of community in action is at our older person’s scheme in Memorial Drive,  where residents gather every Tuesday for a craft club in their community lounge.

At one of their recent crafty afternoons, the residents embraced the spring season and decorated wooden wreaths and plant pots!

They also took part in an Easter-themed quiz and the winners won chocolate treats!

Although these Craft Clubs are simply part of a weekly routine for some of the residents, they’re also a way for them to have a change of scenery and connect with their neighbours.

Getting involved in the community

As part of our community-based approach, we’ve been increasing our presence in our neighbourhoods, engaging with customers, addressing issues and bringing people together.

Over the summer there will be various events coming up where you’ll have the opportunity to chat with us about any concerns as well as meet your neighbours and the community around you.

Visit the Community Hub on Your Voice and register to follow what’s happening in your area.
