Report harm, abuse and neglect to help keep people safe

08 Jul 2024

We care about our customers and want to make sure they’re safe from harm, abuse and neglect.

Harm, abuse and neglect don’t always look the same for everyone and cover lots of different things from hitting someone to stopping someone using their own money to not looking after someone properly. We use the word ‘safeguarding’ when someone is at risk of, or suffering from, harm, abuse and neglect.

Examples of specific types of harm, abuse and neglect:

  • Physical – hitting, slapping, pushing, kicking, misuse of medication, inappropriate use or restraint
  • Sexual – this includes all children under 16 and adults who haven’t consented
  • Psychological and emotional – making someone feel unhappy, humiliated or scared or threatening to hurt someone or take away their support
  • Financial or material – stealing from someone or stopping them from using their money or things. This could also include fraud, exploitation and manipulating someone into lending their money
  • Neglect – ignoring when someone needs caring for and stopping them from using their medication, heating or getting the right food
  • Institutional abuse happens when an organisation who offers a service, does not look after people properly – this could be in somewhere like a hospital or care home
  • Discriminatory is abuse that relates to age, gender, gender assignment status, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability or cultural backgrounds – these are characteristics protected by law
  • Hoarding is where people keep so many things that it interferes with the quality of their everyday life, often filling rooms within a home in a chaotic and disorganised way.
  • Modern day slavery – includes human trafficking and slavery, forcing someone to work for little or no money, forced marriages or paying someone for sex
  • FGM (female genital mutilation) – the removal or cutting of all/some external female genitalia.
