Being A Good Neighbour At Christmas

16 Dec 2021

Here at Leeds Federated we are proud of how our customers have supported one another through another difficult year with the pandemic and the many other issues faced by our communities. You are an example to us all that the long sought after “good neighbour” still exists in good times and bad.

For some of our customers, the loneliness created by the pandemic has been insufferable. For others, the difficulties faced around job losses, health scares and overwhelming stress has contributed to anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods. The holidays are a time when these issues are often at their worst. How can you be a good neighbour this Christmas, and what can you do if you are struggling?

Check in

Check in with neighbours who might be alone. Never underestimate the power of a cup of tea and a mince pie, or even just a Christmas card. Not sure of their name? What a lovely time to ask, or you could use “To our neighbour.”

Neighbourhood watch

Keep an eye out on your street for any suspicious activity. Keep your doors, cars and windows locked to keep those presents safe. Report any unusual behaviour to the police and keep talking to your neighbours about any concerns. Domestic abuse is a concern at all times of year. Call the police on 999 to report any concern for someone’s welfare (or call 101 for non-emergency).

Enjoy the celebrations !

Reach out to family and friends. Join seasonal events in your community. Remember that some neighbours will be sensitive to noise at this time of year and to keep any noise within your home. If you have visitors leaving, ask them to leave quietly and make sure any music cannot be heard from outside. Remember the commitments made in your tenancy agreement not to cause noise nuisance or anti-social behaviour.

What can I do if my neighbours are causing ASB?

You can approach your neighbours politely and let them know that their behaviour is causing you a nuisance. Ask them to turn the music down or for visitors to be mindful of neighbours.

You can contact us on 0113 386 1000. Our offices are closed from 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve to Tuesday 4 January 2021, but we will take emergency calls for repairs, or email us hello@leedsfederated.com and a Neighbourhood Officer will get in touch on their return.

You can also contact the police on 101 (non-emergency) or 999 if it is an emergency.

What do we commit to in 2022?

We have noticed that over half of the complaints made to us involve noise nuisance. In response to this, we have re-launched the Noise App to help capture anti-social behaviour (ASB). Your Neighbourhood Officers now have full access to any recordings made as part of an ASB case and can respond directly to you through the app. If you are living with anti-social behaviour and this is affecting you, contact us to see how we can help.
