'New Roots'- Refugee Support Service

THE AIM OF THE SERVICE

To support and house homeless refugee families or single homeless refugees in temporary or permanent accommodation within Leeds. The service offers:
  • Good quality temporary self-contained fully furnished accommodation
  • Individual support as required, focusing on housing and support needs.
  • Assistance to find permanent accommodation - through LCC, Leeds Fed and other housing providers
  • Assistance and links to other sources of support, other agencies
  • Encouraging independence, confidence, long-term stability.

HOW CAN I REFER?

Referrals will be considered from any source including self-referrals by ringing the number below. Referrals will be especially sought from the Asylum Support Team and the Sunrise Project in Leeds.
You will be assessed before an offer of support is made. When making decisions on your application we will consider your housing history, support needs, and health and safety risks to yourself and others. Support and accommodation are usually offered to the first suitable referral from Asylum Support Team and Sunrise Project. If they cannot fill vacancies then support is usually offered to the applicant with the highest level of need appropriate to what the service can offer.

SUPPORT

This service will provide 15 places for floating support and 5 fully furnished temporary properties. You will have support needs appropriate to the support offered - i.e. you should be able to live independently in self-contained accommodation with regular visits from a Housing Support Worker. If you have more support needs we will only be consider you if you have a support package in place with additional support provided by other agencies (Social Services, Resettlement Team, etc.) Support will be offered in areas such as:

  • Benefit entitlements and applications

  • Accessing education and training for themselves and their children, including English Language skills
  • Support with legal problems
  • Settling into new areas
  • Dealing with utility companies and working unfamiliar token meters
  • Budgeting
  • Debt management
  • Health advice (registering with GP etc.)
  • Neighbour problems
  • Relationship problems
  • Childcare/parenting skills
  • Independent living skills
  • Mental health issues
  • Substance misuse issues
  • Schooling
  • Harm reduction
  • Liaison with other agencies
  • Managing responsibilities (arrears etc.)


LEAVING THE SERVICE

Tenants in temporary accommodation will be assisted with applications for permanent re-housing in areas of individual's choice, with LFHA, LCC or other housing providers.
Where floating support is offered this will be withdrawn once you are able to manage on your own and will be agreed between you and the Housing Support Worker. Support will be provided for a maximum of two years.
