...find out about Aids and Adaptations?
Do you feel your home needs adapting to improve your quality
of life?
'Aids and adaptations' are changes that are made to your home
which help to make your life easier, without you having to move
elsewhere. These can be minor or major and are often provided to
make your life safer and easier, especially if you have mobility
problems or if you have a disability.
Minor adaptations
If you are
experiencing problems with mobility around your home we may be able
to help by supplying lever taps, handrails or other aids to ensure
that your home is made as comfortable as possible. In accordance
with Disability Equality Duty (2006) Leeds Federated will usually
pay for minor works when it is clear that they are needed. Minor
adaptations do not normally need assessing by an Occupational
Therapist (OT), unless your requirements are particularly
technical.
Major Adaptations
Any changes
requiring major work costing over £500 may be eligible for a
Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) from your Local Authority. This
includes works such as installing a stair lift, a level access
shower or an automatic door entry system. To qualify for this grant
you need to have an assessment by an Occupational Therapist (OT) to
make sure that the most appropriate solution is identified for your
needs.
What will it cost you?
Minor adaptations are fully funded by Leeds Federated and
therefore you won't pay anything. For Major Adaptations you need to
complete a form about your income to find out how much, if any, of
the cost will be paid by the Local Authority. If your income is
only from benefits you would normally qualify for a full grant. If
you don't qualify for a full grant you are still entitled to the
Occupational Therapist's advice free of charge. We do recommend
that you always get advice from an expert before you buy
specialised equipment as it is often expensive and you need to be
sure that it is appropriate for your needs.
What do you need to do?
In the first instance, if you feel that major or minor
adaptations would improve your quality of life, please contact us
for advice, on 0113 3861000.
Please note:
· Some homes are not suitable
for certain adaptations and, if that is the case, it may be
necessary for you to consider moving elsewhere, perhaps to
somewhere that is already adapted. If this is something you need to
consider then please ask us for advice.
· Aids not connected to your
home, for example hearing aids or a wheelchair, are not covered by
this service.
